President of the United States Joe Biden accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of war crimes in the Ukrainian suburb of Bucha and called for a trial against him.
Referencing the killing of civilians in Bucha, Biden said “you saw what happened in Bucha, this warrants him, he is a war criminal”.
This comes in the wake of mass graves and corpses being found with their hands bound and shot at close range, as Russian forces retreated from Bucha.
Biden added: “”We have to gather the information. We have to continue to provide Ukraine with the weapons they need to continue the fight. And we have to get all the detail so this can be an actual, have a war crimes trial.”
The Kremlin has thus far denied all accusations leveled against them in relation to the killing of civilians, alleging that the mass graves and dead bodies were staged by Ukraine.
Jake Sullivan, the National Security Advisor, said that the US will be seeking information from their sources to build a case for war crimes against Russia, with their sources being their intelligence services, Ukrainian observations on the ground, international organisations, as well as interviews from independent media around the world.
Sullivan added that the US will be building a case at the International Criminal Court.
