Joint Operation in CBD: 1 Arrested and Seizures of Vapes, PMDs and Bicycles

In a concerted effort to enhance public safety, a multi-agency operation in Singapore’s Central Business District (CBD) resulted in the arrest of one individual and the confiscation of various illegal items, including personal mobility devices (PMDs), bicycles, and e-vaporisers. The operation, conducted on June 6, was a collaborative initiative involving the Singapore Police Force (SPF), the Land Transport Authority (LTA), and the Health Sciences Authority (HSA).

During the operation, authorities detected a total of 16 offences, which included riding non-compliant PMDs on public roads, using unregistered vehicles, and riding bicycles without functioning handbrakes. Additionally, several individuals were found in illegal possession of e-vaporisers, which are prohibited under current regulations.

Details of the Operation

The enforcement action led to the seizure of one unregistered vehicle, five bicycles, and eight e-vaporisers. The arrested individual faces charges for allegedly committing a rash act that caused hurt to another person. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges posed by errant cyclists and PMD users in urban areas, where safety is paramount.

The joint operation is part of a broader strategy to address the misuse of PMDs and bicycles, particularly in busy areas like the CBD. Authorities are keen to ensure that all users adhere to safety regulations, which are designed to protect both riders and pedestrians.

Commitment to Public Safety

In a joint statement, the SPF, LTA, and HSA emphasised their commitment to maintaining public safety and the importance of compliance with existing laws. They reiterated that they take a serious stance on offences that jeopardise the safety of the community. The agencies plan to conduct more regular and ad-hoc enforcement operations to ensure adherence to regulations and to deter reckless behaviour.

Cyclists and PMD users are urged to familiarise themselves with the rules governing their use, including the prohibition of non-compliant devices and the necessity for proper safety equipment. Furthermore, the public is reminded that possessing, using, or purchasing e-vaporisers is illegal, and violators may face significant penalties.

As the authorities continue to clamp down on these offences, the message is clear: safety on the roads and public paths is a shared responsibility, and compliance with the law is essential for the well-being of all.
