JOSEPHINE TEO: “5,280 S’PORE CITIZENS RETRENCHED BETWEEN JAN AND JUNE THIS YEAR”

Minister for Manpower Josephine Teo told Parliament on September 4 that according to preliminary data, 5,280 Singapore Citizens were retrenched between January and June this year.

She also revealed that about 11,000 citizens were placed on unpaid leave, compared to the 33,000 non-citizens during the same period.

Teo also said that Singaporeans who had their pay reduced by more than half formed a “small minority”.

When asked about the number of unemployed workers above 50-years-old and the average time it take for them to find re-employment, Teo said: “Based on the latest available data on the duration of unemployment, the median period for residents aged 50 and over was 12 weeks. This had been broadly stable for a number of years.”

She also said that so far, more than 95,000 positions have been created.
