I’m a regular at a local coffee shop. I stop in nearly every day on my lunch break so I’ve gotten to know the owners and most of the staff. They’re all great.
Yesterday I went and there was a girl I didn’t recognize behind the counter, I assume she’s new. I placed my usual order, kopi-o-kosong. She turns around to pour the coffee and I notice her fill the cup up less than 1/5 and tops it up with hot water. She puts the cup in front of me and I ask her why she filled the cup up with hot water, its like diluted coffee. She said they ran out of coffee and needed to make a new batch so she used the hot water to top it off.
It was so light I think a cup of green tea looks darker.
I told her I won’t drink diluted kopi and she responded that it doesn’t make a difference because it’s all the same and she didn’t feel like putting on a new pot because it would take 6 mins. I told her it’s not all the same, and I would’ve waited for the fresh pot or ordered something else.
She gave me a wtf look, said it’s industry standard to do that and walked to the back and didn’t come back out again. She sent out another worker I’m friendly with who apologized and got me the correct coffee.
I went in today and the owner was there and half-jokingly half-seriously asked why I was causing problems with his employee. I don’t feel comfortable going there anymore and I’m wondering if it really is a standard practice?
Here are what netizens think:
- siao, 1/5 like that order hot water sua
- Former employee of a really large, global coffee chain. This is not normal at all.
- Even a child can tell the difference by looking at it.
