A state-owned biopharmaceutical plant that makes animal vaccines reportedly leaked a bacterial disease the resulted in thousands in north-west China being infected last year.
Named Brucellosis, it is a disease caused by close contact with infected animals or animal products, bringing about fevers, joint pain and headaches.
Health officials have said 3,245 people had caught the disease, although there was no evidence of person to person transmission thus far.
Authorities disclosed that a biopharmaceutical plant used expired disinfectant in their production of Brucella vaccines for animals, resulting in the bacteria not being eradicated from the plant’s exhaust.
The contaminated gas formed aerosols containing the bacteria which was then carried by wing to the Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute nearby, infecting nearly 200 people there.
The factory has since had their vaccine production license revoked.
