The clash between a restaurant owner and her landlord has garnered attention due to allegations of unpaid rent and an altercation that occurred on the premises. The incident took place at a popular grilled fish restaurant located on Geylang Road, according to Shin Min Daily News.
Background of the Incident
The restaurant’s owner, Ms. Zhang, took over the establishment in September of the previous year and began operating the grilled fish business.
However, in April of the current year, she faced some financial difficulties that resulted in delayed rent payments.
She approached the landlord, seeking understanding and a temporary arrangement, with the intention of eventually catching up on the dues. Unfortunately, this led to an ongoing conflict with the landlord.
Financial Trouble and Delayed Rent Payment
Ms. Zhang’s restaurant encountered some financial setbacks in April, prompting her to request an extension for rent payment. She assured the landlord that she would eventually pay the overdue amount.
However, despite her efforts to communicate and make partial payments, the landlord continued to escalate the situation.
Landlord’s Reaction and Lock Changes
In May, the landlord decided to change the locks on the restaurant, leaving a notice stating that the establishment was closed due to delayed rent payments.
This action affected the restaurant’s operations and reputation. Ms. Zhang, alarmed by this move, immediately contacted the landlord and paid a fee to regain access to her restaurant.
The Altercation: Accusations and Confrontation
In July, the situation worsened when the landlord changed the locks again, preventing Ms. Zhang from entering her own business.
When she attempted to open the restaurant, the landlord’s wife physically restrained her and, according to Ms. Zhang, the landlord even brandished a stick, holding it against her neck to prevent her from entering.
Witnessing the altercation, nearby shop owners intervened and some even called the police. The presence of the authorities did not deter Ms. Zhang, and she continued to act defiantly. Eventually, the police had no choice but to arrest her for public disturbance.
Landlord’s Perspective on the Situation
Mdm Mary, the landlord’s wife, offered an explanation for their actions. According to her, Ms. Zhang had accumulated six months of unpaid rent, leaving them with no other option but to lock the premises.
Mdm. Mary emphasized that their intention was not to harass or inconvenience Ms. Zhang but to collect the overdue rent.
