It is said that landlords in Singapore can be quite peculiar, but just how strange can they get?
Recently, a user on Xiaohongshu shared a list of 14 “house rules” set by a landlord in Singapore, stating that if tenants cannot comply, they must leave.
14 Quirky House Rules Set by a Singaporean Landlord: Must Leave Home from 8 AM to 5 PM, Extra Charge for Laptop Charging
What rental agreements come with a monthly rent of 750 SGD for a public housing unit in Singapore?
- Doors are locked at 10:30 PM; tenants must be home by 10 PM to avoid disturbing others.
- Tenants must leave the house from 8 AM to 5 PM, except on weekends or public holidays.
- No working in the room, as it may disturb the children studying and others’ peace.
- No eating or consuming sweets in the room to avoid cockroaches and ants.
- The room and bathroom must be cleaned weekly, and before-and-after photos must be shared in the group as proof.
- After showering, tenants must dry the bathroom floor to prevent others from slipping.
- No hair or dirt should be left in the bathroom or living room.
- Laundry is allowed only once a week, and clothes must be dried outside. Underwear can only be dried in the room to avoid spreading bad luck.
- No guests are allowed.
- Smoking is prohibited in the room.
- Tenants can boil water and cook noodles but must clean up afterward.
- Water and electricity must be conserved; air conditioning is not allowed.
- Tenants must give one month’s notice before moving out, with the deposit being the last month’s rent.
- Charging a mobile phone is free, but charging a laptop incurs an additional monthly fee of 10 SGD.
Don’t think this landlord’s rules are an exception; many landlords impose similar agreements, with some even requiring tenants to place a basin on the floor while showering, limiting shower time to 10 minutes, or cutting off the internet after 10 PM. If tenants fail to comply, they may be asked to leave immediately.
