Last night, at approximately 11:50 pm, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded to a fire incident at Block 463, Crawford Lane. Upon arrival, SCDF personnel observed black smoke emanating from a unit on the 15th floor.
Firefighters from Kallang Fire Station promptly conducted forcible entry into the affected unit, finding it unoccupied at the time of the incident. The fire, localized in the living room, was successfully extinguished by SCDF using a water jet. Fortunately, all 35 residents from the affected block had evacuated before the arrival of SCDF, and there were no reported injuries.
Fire from PAB bicycle battery
Preliminary investigations by SCDF revealed that the fire originated from the battery pack of a Power Assisted Bicycle (PAB) charging in the living room. SCDF took the opportunity to remind the public about the potential dangers associated with leaving Personal Mobility Device (PMD) or Power Assisted Bicycle batteries charging for extended periods, especially overnight. SCDF emphasized the importance of using original batteries and cautioned against the purchase or use of non-original batteries.
In response to the incident, SCDF issued a set of fire safety tips, which is included in an accompanying infographic. The guidelines aim to educate the public on preventive measures to mitigate the risk of fires related to the charging of batteries for PMDs and PABs.
SCDF encourages the public to adhere to these safety recommendations to ensure the well-being of residents and the prevention of such incidents in the future.
