Lee Wei Ling, Daughter of Lee Kuan Yew, Passes Away at 69
Lee Wei Ling, the daughter of Singapore’s founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, has passed away at the age of 69. Her younger brother, Lee Hsien Yang, announced her passing on Facebook, saying that she had been “extremely unwell” and had been battling a rare brain disorder.
Lee Wei Ling had been open about her health struggles, sharing her diagnosis with a rare brain disorder in August 2020. She had written about her experiences and struggles with the condition, describing her movements as “slow and hesitant” and having difficulty getting up from her futon.
Lee Hsien Yang paid tribute to his sister, saying that she was a strong and stoic person who had always been there for their family. He shared a quote from her eulogy at their father’s funeral in 2015, where she said, “I can’t break down [and cry], I am a Hakka woman.” Lee Hsien Yang added, “Ling, I am less stoic than you.”
Lee Hsien Yang also requested that well-wishers donate to three charities in lieu of flowers: Canossa Mission Singapore, Parkinson Society Singapore, and Total Well-Being SG Limited.
Lee Wei Ling’s passing has been met with an outpouring of tributes and condolences from Singaporeans and others who knew her. She will be remembered for her strength, resilience, and dedication to her family and community.
In a statement, Lee Hsien Yang said, “At our father’s funeral in 2015, Ling closed her eulogy thus ‘I can’t break down [and cry], I am a Hakka woman.’ Ling, I am less stoic than you.” He also shared a photo of his sister, saying, “Extremely unwell, but still smiling.”
Lee Wei Ling’s legacy will live on through her family and the many people whose lives she touched. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will continue to inspire and motivate others to live with courage and resilience in the face of adversity
