Following PM Lee’s lawsuit against blogger Leong Sze Hian for defamation because Leong shared an article about his alleged involvement in the 1MDB scandal onto his Facebook, he was ordered by the High Court to pay $262,327.22 in damages, cost and disbursements.
Leong shared the article onto Facebook without adding any comments, and the court noted that the post garnered 22 reactions, 5 comments and 18 shares from netizens.
PM Lee’s lawyers then gave Leong a deadline of 17 May for him to make the payments.
Lim Tean then shared onto his Facebook, saying that the amount has been raised by Leong, with every single cent raised through donations from Singaporeans from all walks of life.
He wrote that he had hand delivered the cheque and an epic letter to PM Lee’s lawyers, the letter reads:
“Dear Sirs,
Please found our client’s DBS cashiers order for the amount of $262,327.22 being full and final payment of the damages together with legal costs and disbursements awarded to your client.
Your client will be aware that every cent of this amount was donated to our client by the people of Singapore in an epic demonstration of their condemnation and anger at your clients use of the libel laws to silence and chill dissent.
It was conduct unbefitting of a Prime Minister.
The courageous citizens of Singapore were determined not to allow your client the satisfaction of suing critics until their pants drop.
Your client may have won in a court of law, but this cashiers order is proof that he has lost decisively in the court of public opinion.
Yours Faithfully
Lim Tean”
