Secondary 1 student Sylvia Low, from Pasir Ris Secondary School was the recipient of the Edusave Merit Bursary and Edusave Good Progress Award earlier this year, she did not even consider keeping the money for herself.
God bless this young girl’s heart, because used the $400 to buy face masks for 1,500 children hailing from low-income families to cope with the pandemic.
Sylvia said she realized some families lacked the means to buy essential items for themselves, so she decided to donate the masks, adding: “I felt like this was what I should do. I didn’t feel like everybody needed to know.”
Sylvia made the donation without the knowledge of her teachers and peers.
Her parents said they supported her decision and wasn’t surprised by her keen desire to help others, as she was always involved in community service at school.
Sylvia sought Senior Minister of State for Defence and Foreign Affairs Maliki Osman for assistance, who then linked her up with families in the area whose children needed the masks.
In a media statement, Dr Maliki said: “I am very proud of Sylvia – so young yet with such a big heart to be able to feel for the less fortunate, a small gesture coming from such a young girl speaks volumes about the kind of society that we are moving towards.”
Well done Sylvia!
