Bus Slams Into Height Barrier, 7 Injured in Kajang
A terrifying accident occurred late last night in Kajang, Malaysia, when a long-distance bus carrying 22 passengers slammed into a height restriction barrier. The impact was so severe that the barrier almost sliced the bus in half from the front to the middle section, leaving seven people injured. Authorities suspect the driver was distracted while using a navigation app at the time of the crash.
The incident took place around 11.25pm on Jalan Berlian in Bandar Putra Permai, Kajang, near the border of Negeri Sembilan. The Kajang District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Nazron, revealed that the 62-year-old Malay driver was ferrying 19 adults and three children from Kuantan towards Negeri Sembilan and Malacca. Unfortunately, he failed to notice the height barrier while allegedly checking his GPS, leading to the catastrophic collision.
Driver Distraction Suspected in Serious Bus Crash
Police reported that the bus’s front and roof suffered extensive damage in the crash. Among the seven injured were the driver himself, three women, and three men. Four victims were rushed to Serdang Hospital, while the remaining three received treatment at Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital in Seremban. Thankfully, other uninjured passengers were picked up by their families and have since returned home safely.
Assistant Commissioner Nazron confirmed that the case is now under investigation for reckless driving under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. This law penalises drivers who cause accidents through negligence or failure to exercise due care on the road.
Importance of Travel Insurance for Passengers
This incident highlights the crucial role of travel insurance, especially for those travelling by long-distance buses or coaches. Comprehensive travel insurance can cover medical expenses, emergency hospitalisation, and even evacuation costs if accidents occur. It also provides financial protection for unexpected delays, cancellations, or lost belongings, offering peace of mind to passengers and their families. Investing in travel insurance should be a priority for anyone planning domestic or international journeys.
Police Urge Road Safety and Vigilance
In the wake of the accident, police have reminded all road users to prioritise road safety, maintain full attention when driving, and strictly adhere to traffic rules. Distraction caused by mobile devices or navigation systems has been cited in numerous road accidents, making it a critical area of concern in ongoing road safety campaigns.
