As Singapore celebrated its 60th National Day on 9 August, one promotion had motorists lining up well before the clock struck midnight. The Smart Energy petrol station at Mandai offered an unprecedented 40% discount on fuel for a single day, drawing long queues that started forming hours before the official launch.
By the time the promotion began at exactly 12am, a steady stream of vehicles had already filled Mandai Link, snaking all the way to Mandai Road. For many drivers, the savings on offer made the wait worthwhile, especially given the recent fluctuations in petrol prices in Singapore.
A TikTok user who arrived at 11.57pm was among the first in line. Despite the early arrival, she found several cars ahead of her. By the time she filled her tank and drove away, the queue had grown into a long trail of cars, a scene she described as “madness”.
Motorists Enjoy Significant Fuel Savings
The promotion, part of the SG60 celebration, was open exclusively to Smart Energy Card members. New customers could sign up at the station to enjoy the offer, but payment had to be made via a prepaid top-up on the membership card before fuelling.
The TikTok user, driving a Toyota Corolla Axio with less than a quarter tank, topped up her card with S$50. Her calculations proved accurate — a full tank cost her just S$48.99, an unusually low amount for her vehicle. Many other motorists reported similar fuel savings across the day.
The 40% discount applied to both petrol and diesel purchases and was available until 11.59pm at Smart Energy’s three locations — Mandai, Jalan Buroh, and Defu Lane. The deal prompted drivers from various parts of Singapore to make the trip, despite the possibility of long waits.
Promotion Reflects Growing Demand for Cheaper Fuel Options
With rising living costs and volatile global oil prices, discounts of this scale are rare in Singapore’s competitive fuel market. The National Day promotion by Smart Energy demonstrates how price cuts can significantly influence consumer behaviour, especially when combined with festive spirit and limited-time urgency.
Industry observers note that such cheap petrol promotions could become a valuable marketing tool for independent fuel retailers aiming to compete with established oil giants. However, the logistical challenge of managing heavy traffic and ensuring smooth service remains a key concern.
For drivers, the event was a chance to fill up at a fraction of the usual cost — and for some, a memorable way to mark National Day.
