In a stride towards technological innovation and enhanced user experience, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has introduced a novel solution that is set to transform the way pedestrians interact with signalised crossings.
The latest addition to the urban landscape comes in the form of touchless buttons, designed to activate the Green Man signal without the need for any physical contact. As part of a forward-thinking initiative, these touchless buttons are being deployed at select signalised crossings across Singapore in a 6-month trial period.
A Gesture of Progress
LTA’s touchless buttons allow pedestrians to activate the Green Man simply by waving their hand in front of the sensor.
The trial phase of this groundbreaking concept is being rolled out across four signalised crossings. These strategic locations were chosen to represent a diverse range of pedestrian traffic scenarios, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of the technology’s performance.
The four locations selected for the touchless button trial are:
- Jalan Besar near Syed Alwi Road
- Tampines Street 86 near Blk 879A
- Bukit Batok Street 32 near St Anthony’s Primary School
- Yishun Street 21 near Blk 219
Despite the shift to a more futuristic interface, there is no alteration to the waiting and crossing time at these designated locations.
Pedestrian safety remains paramount, and the touchless buttons are seamlessly integrated into the existing signalised crossing systems.
The reduction of physical contact with conventional buttons is anticipated to extend the lifespan of the infrastructure, potentially leading to cost savings in maintenance and replacements.
As the 6-month trial unfolds, LTA is keenly interested in gathering feedback from the community. Public input will play a pivotal role in determining the efficacy of the touchless buttons and their seamless integration into the urban landscape.
As the trial period progresses and data accumulates, LTA will be closely monitoring the touchless button deployment.
Regular updates are expected, providing insights into the technology’s performance and the potential for a wider rollout in the future.
LTA’s Facebook post
Don’t be surprised if you come across someone waving at a signalised crossing near you! They could just be activating the Green Man with our new touchless buttons.
These special buttons are being progressively installed at 4 signalised crossings this month under a 6-month trial. The four locations are:
1️⃣ Jalan Besar near Syed Alwi Road,
2️⃣ Tampines Street 86 near Blk 879A,
3️⃣ Bukit Batok Street 32 near St Anthony’s Primary School, and
4️⃣ Yishun Street 21 near Blk 219.
There’s no change to the waiting and crossing time at these locations.
With no physical contact, we’re hoping this would reduce the wear and tear on our infrastructure. Your feedback will also help us assess if these touchless buttons work just as well or better than conventional ones. Stay tuned for our latest updates!
