A tense confrontation between two foreign domestic helpers in Tampines has raised fresh concerns about safety within residential estates, after a dispute escalated into a knife-related incident inside an HDB stairwell.
The altercation reportedly took place on the morning of March 22 at Block 739 Tampines Street 72, where residents were startled by loud shouting coming from the lower floors. What initially appeared to be a verbal argument quickly drew attention due to the emotional intensity and subsequent police presence.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with one of the women visibly distressed and seated on the floor, crying. By the time neighbours came closer to check, police officers had already arrived and were managing the situation.
Residents Describe Heated Confrontation
According to individuals living in the block, the argument involved two Indonesian domestic helpers believed to have known each other for several months. One resident shared that his wife had stepped out after hearing the commotion, only to find the pair locked in a heated exchange.
The situation escalated further when one of the women was seen holding a small knife. Although there were no reports of her actively threatening anyone, her agitated behaviour caused concern among those nearby, prompting residents to keep a safe distance.
Attempts to calm the situation were unsuccessful, as the tension remained high. Witnesses noted that multiple police vehicles arrived shortly after, signalling the seriousness of the incident.
Police Intervention and Arrest
Authorities later confirmed that officers responding to the scene encountered a woman holding a knife along a corridor. She was swiftly disarmed and arrested on suspicion of carrying an offensive weapon in a public space.
The 35-year-old was subsequently conveyed to Changi General Hospital for further assessment. No injuries were reported among residents or the other helper involved.
The second domestic helper returned to her employer’s home following the incident and was said to be unharmed. Her employer later confirmed that she did not sustain any physical injuries during the confrontation.
Possible Relationship Dispute Behind Incident
Preliminary accounts suggest that the dispute may have stemmed from a personal or romantic disagreement. A resident familiar with one of the helpers described her as generally friendly and approachable, adding that the two women had been seen interacting frequently over the past six months.
While the exact cause remains under investigation, the suspected emotional nature of the conflict highlights how personal disputes can escalate unexpectedly in shared living environments.
By the afternoon, the scene had returned to normal, with no visible police activity. However, the incident has left residents unsettled, raising broader questions about conflict management and mental well-being among domestic workers living far from home.
Police investigations are ongoing.
