In a shocking case that unfolded recently, a 32-year-old maid, Oo Win Kyi, was sentenced to 13 months’ jail for assaulting her employer’s 86-year-old mother, who was bedridden and suffering from dementia.
The incident involved a series of violent acts, including punching the elderly woman, causing her to fall and fracture her thigh, according to The Straits Times.
Background of the Case
Oo Win Kyi, residing in her employer’s residence in Sengkang, was entrusted with the care of the elderly victim and tasked with household chores.
The victim, already bedridden and dealing with dementia, had suffered a stroke earlier in the year. Oo Win Kyi was well aware of the victim’s delicate health condition.
On October 19, around 5:30 pm, a disturbing incident occurred. Oo Win Kyi attempted to assist the victim in standing up to exercise, but the elderly woman slowly fell onto the ground.
The maid then pulled the victim back up and placed her on the bed, before punching her 4 times on the left side of her face, resulting in her falling onto the floor.
The whole incident was caught on CCTV camera inside the home.
The maid’s employer then brought his mother to the hospital for treatment later that night after the maid told him that the woman’s left leg was swollen, and she was then found to have a fracture in her thigh.
A police report against the made was then lodged the following day.
Legal Proceedings
Subsequently, Oo Win Kyi pleaded guilty to the charges of assaulting a vulnerable person. Additional charges, involving biting the victim’s hand and using an abs roller to hit her hand on a separate occasion, were also considered during the sentencing.
The victim, already grappling with health challenges, suffered a distal femur fracture as a result of the assault. The impact of such an injury on an elderly person, already in a fragile state, raises concerns about the well-being of vulnerable individuals in caregiving situations.
