The Singapore Police Force confirmed that the fires occurred between March 10 and March 12 at several locations within the industrial zone, including Sungei Kadut Drive, Sungei Kadut Street 1 and Sungei Kadut Crescent. The incidents triggered emergency responses and raised concerns among businesses operating in the area.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported across all three incidents, and the fires were eventually brought under control with the assistance of firefighters and members of the public.

Three Fires Reported Over Three Consecutive Days

According to authorities, the first two fires were reported on March 10 and March 11. Both incidents required intervention from the Singapore Civil Defence Force, which successfully extinguished the flames before they could spread further or cause serious damage.

The third fire occurred on March 12. In this instance, nearby members of the public managed to put out the fire before emergency responders arrived at the scene. Their quick action prevented the situation from escalating and helped limit the impact on surrounding premises.

Preliminary investigations indicated that all three fires were likely started intentionally. The incidents occurred within the same industrial district, prompting police to investigate the possibility that they were linked.

Industrial estates like Sungei Kadut house numerous workshops, warehouses and manufacturing facilities, meaning fires in such areas can pose significant financial risks to businesses and property owners.

Police Investigation Leads to Arrest

Following investigative work by officers from the Woodlands Police Division, authorities identified a suspect believed to be connected to the incidents. The 20-year-old man was arrested on March 12.

Police also recovered several items believed to have been used in the alleged offences, including a lighter and a pair of gloves. These items have been seized as evidence to assist with the investigation and upcoming court proceedings.

The suspect is expected to be formally charged in court on March 14.

Possible Penalties for Mischief by Fire

Under Singapore law, intentionally starting a fire that damages property can lead to serious criminal charges. Individuals convicted of mischief by fire with the intent to cause damage may face significant legal consequences.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment, along with a potential fine. The severity of the punishment can depend on factors such as the extent of damage caused, the level of planning involved, and whether lives were placed at risk.

Authorities regularly warn that deliberately starting fires is a dangerous act that can threaten lives, destroy property and disrupt businesses.

The police have reiterated that they take such offences seriously and will continue to investigate suspicious fires thoroughly to ensure those responsible are held accountable under Singapore law.
