According to CNA, the incident happened at around 5am on May 18. Police said the man was seen falling onto the track in front of an oncoming train before he was struck.

Officers from the Singapore Police Force and paramedics from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded to the scene shortly after receiving a call for assistance at about 5.50am. The man was later pronounced dead at the station.

Police investigations are still ongoing, although preliminary findings indicate that foul play is not suspected at this stage.

Train Services Suspended During Morning Peak Hour

The incident resulted in significant transport disruptions for commuters travelling along the Bukit Panjang LRT network during the morning rush hour.

Transport operator SMRT initially announced a “major delay” on the line before later clarifying that the disruption was caused by a “track intrusion”.

In a later update, SMRT confirmed that a man had fallen onto the tracks near Segar station, leading to the suspension of train services between Bukit Panjang and Senja stations.

Services between Petir and Senja stations were also temporarily halted to allow police officers safe access to the tracks while investigations were being carried out.

Free bridging bus services were activated to help affected passengers travel between disrupted stations. Regular bus services in the area were also available for commuters trying to continue their journeys.

SMRT added that train operations between Choa Chu Kang MRT Station and Bukit Panjang MRT Station remained operational throughout the disruption.

Passengers requiring proof of travel delay were advised to apply for an e-Travel Chit through the SMRT website.

BPLRT Renewal Works Still Ongoing

The Bukit Panjang LRT system has faced several disruptions and reliability concerns over the years, with authorities currently carrying out extensive upgrading and renewal works.

The BPLRT network spans approximately 8km and connects residents in Bukit Panjang and Choa Chu Kang to Singapore’s North-South Line and Downtown Line.

The Land Transport Authority previously announced that around 88 per cent of the renewal project had been completed as of November 2025. The full upgrade project is expected to finish by the final quarter of 2026.

The ongoing modernisation effort is part of broader rail reliability improvements across Singapore’s public transport system, which includes infrastructure upgrades, predictive maintenance technology, and train fleet enhancements aimed at reducing breakdowns and improving commuter safety.

The incident at Segar station has once again drawn attention to commuter safety and rail system operations during peak travel periods in Singapore.
