A 70-year-old man has died following an alleged altercation involving a knife along Lorong 16 in Geylang. The fatal incident reportedly took place in the morning and prompted a swift response from emergency services and police.
Authorities said the victim was found unconscious at the scene and later transported to hospital, where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries. The case is now under active investigation by the police.
According to the Singapore Police Force, the fight involved two men who were known to each other prior to the incident.
Police Respond To Early Morning Incident
Police were alerted to the altercation at around 8:15am along Lorong 16 Geylang.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the confrontation occurred between a 70-year-old man and a 48-year-old man. The situation allegedly escalated into violence, with a knife believed to have been used during the altercation.
The older man was reportedly found unconscious at the scene and later transported to hospital by emergency responders.
A 48-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested for allegedly voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon.
Area Cordoned Off During Police Investigation
Photos circulating on social media showed multiple police vehicles and officers deployed at the location shortly after the incident.
The area along Lorong 16 was cordoned off with police tape while investigators carried out their initial inquiries.
Witnesses nearby reportedly saw law enforcement personnel securing the scene as they collected evidence and interviewed individuals in the vicinity.
Police have yet to release further details about the circumstances leading up to the confrontation.
Two Men Sent To Different Hospitals
The Singapore Civil Defence Force confirmed that it had also been alerted to the incident at about 8:15am.
Emergency medical teams were dispatched to the location, with ambulances arriving shortly after.
One injured individual was transported to Tan Tock Seng Hospital while another was taken to Raffles Hospital for medical treatment.
The victim who had been conveyed unconscious later died from his injuries.
Suspect Believed To Be Former Employee
Reports indicated that the man suspected of wielding the knife was previously employed by the victim. The pair were therefore believed to have had a prior working relationship.
However, the exact cause of the dispute has not been publicly disclosed.
Police investigations are currently ongoing as officers continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal altercation.
If convicted of voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon, the accused could face significant penalties under Singapore law, including a lengthy prison term.
