On the night of 10 August 2025, at approximately 10:35 pm, police responded to a call for assistance near Commonwealth Avenue West. A man had been detained by a member of the public for reportedly stealing a gold chain valued at around S$16,400. The victim had arranged to meet a potential buyer along Clementi Avenue 4 after listing the chain for sale on Carousell.

During the meeting, the suspect pretended to inspect the gold chain by placing it on a weighing scale. Seizing the opportunity, he grabbed the chain and fled the scene. The victim quickly pursued him and managed to detain the suspect along Commonwealth Avenue West, with help from a passerby.

Offensive Weapon and Charges

Police found the stolen gold chain in the suspect’s possession, along with a folding knife measuring 15.5cm. The man has been charged in court for theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code 1871 and for carrying offensive weapons in public under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

Theft offences in Singapore can carry up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both. Carrying offensive weapons in public places may lead to up to three years’ imprisonment and a minimum of six strokes of the cane.
