Why is the working environment so laid back in MNC?

Hi all, I’m working for a local SME and i happened to have a job needed to visit around CG1 Expo which houses mostly MNC.

Comparing the working culture and the environment, over here it is so laid back that i don’t feel like the people here are working at all. People came to the office around 1030am, sipping coffee leisurely at the cafe nearby.

For contrast, I am working as an engineer and 8 hours is barely enough to complete my assigned task. It make me wonders if this is how working environment should be? Should I work this hard every single day that i feel like burning out it just a matter of time.

1. Division of labour is much more clear cut in a large MNC, everyone is hired to do a specific job and the spillover of tasks is less frequent than if you work in a smaller firm or smaller team.

   Work might have peak/low season. Maybe they worked till late so start late too. Could be having a coffee catchup, nothing unusual.
   If it’s a constant non stop work at your company, probably you need to assess if it’s something you can tahan, otherwise look elsewhere.
3. Whatever you see are probably the exceptions and not the norm. There are a lot of MNCs in different industries. Engineers working in semiconductor companies like micron or petrochemical industry like shell/Exxon work very long hours too
4. In the last MNC I used to work as, I have to liaise with the French, Indians & Chinese. Everyone got their own pattern (own PHs, own start/end work time & also their own high tea time smh) so really sometimes is just go to pantry area talk cock and wait for them
5. I’ve been in MNCs and SMEs, and it doesn’t really matter. If your immediate superior is toxic, there’s no easy day for you. So far, my experience tells me that MNCs are more structured and there are a lot of layers between your CEO and you, so as long as you do your job quickly, you can hide and go undetected easily.
6. When I interned with a mnc I will have teams meetings at 11pm cause due to different timezones. So the hours are more flexible if you had a late meeting the day before it was perfect acceptable to claim back your time and come in later the next day.
