Most lethal weapons are controlled items in Singapore and it is not easy to acquire one unless there are appropriate licenses to import it.
A man was charged in court after he was found in possession of one.
According to CNA, 27-year-old Kenneth Tan Hong Chang also faced one charge of using a styrofoam replica of a katana in a separate incident.
The incident took place along Hougang Street 61, the Police were contacted after a man was seen chasing another with a katana in public.
What happened
On 7 July 2022 at about 2.20am, the Police received a call for assistance along Hougang Street 61, where a man was purportedly holding a sword and chasing someone. Through ground enquiries and the assistance of Police Cameras (PolCams), officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division subsequently established the identity of the man and arrested him. A katana sword measuring 73cm in length was recovered from the boot of the man’s car and seized as case exhibit. No one was injured in the incident.
The incident took place in the vicinity of Blocks 692 and 695, reported CNA.
Thankfully, no one was injured. The Police managed to apprehend the suspect and found a 73cm katana from the man’s car.
Penalties
The man will be charged in court on 8 July 2022 for the offence of possession of scheduled weapon under Section 7(1)(a) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, which carries an imprisonment term not exceeding five years, and caning of not less than six strokes.
