MAN CLAIMS M’SIA POLICE OFFICER OFFERS HIM RM500 TO RETRACT HIS POLICE REPORT

‘I Became a Victim on Both Sides’: Man Claims Police Officer Tried to Bribe Him After Reporting ‘Ah Long’ Syndicate

A Malaysian man who lodged a police report after being harassed by loan sharks has accused a police officer of misconduct, claiming that the officer offered him a RM500 bribe (around S$143) to withdraw his complaint. The shocking allegations have sparked an internal investigation into the officers involved.

Man says he was humiliated while filing his report

The victim, who spoke to New Straits Times under the condition of anonymity, said he filed the report after being threatened by an ‘Ah Long’ syndicate. According to him, he was later summoned to the district police headquarters on October 1 to provide a statement.

“When I arrived, the assistant investigating officer was busy, so I waited outside. When I was finally allowed in, there were two empty chairs, but I wasn’t invited to sit,” he recounted. “After standing for a long time, I decided to sit on the floor. The officer then told me to write my statement while seated on the floor.”

The man said he remained in that position for about 30 to 40 minutes, describing the ordeal as “humiliating” and “degrading”. He added that he felt more like a criminal than a victim, despite coming forward to report a crime.

Offered RM500 to retract police report

Two days later, the man received a phone call from the investigating officer requesting additional documents, leading him to believe that the case was being handled seriously. However, his hope quickly faded when he received another call — this time from the same officer — asking him to withdraw his report.

“I was offered RM500 and told that if I didn’t retract my report, the case would be marked as ‘no further action’. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing,” he said. “I went to the police for protection, but I ended up being victimised by both sides.”

Police confirm internal probe into misconduct allegations

Following his allegations, Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar confirmed that an internal disciplinary investigation has been launched involving two police personnel — one officer and one rank-and-file member.

“Preliminary checks revealed elements of misconduct, and the matter will be investigated thoroughly,” Shazeli stated. “The Selangor police take all complaints seriously, and if any wrongdoing is proven, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.”

He also emphasised that the police remain committed to handling public grievances properly and maintaining integrity within the force.

Rising concerns over trust in law enforcement

This case has reignited public discussion about police accountability and the treatment of victims in Malaysia. Many netizens expressed outrage online, urging authorities to ensure that officers involved in corruption or abuse of power face strict consequences.

While investigations are ongoing, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of how vulnerable victims can sometimes suffer twice — first at the hands of criminals, and again from those meant to protect them.
