On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at approximately 8:10 pm, an incident unfolded at Block 446 Clementi Avenue 3, where a cat lover, engaged in feeding the community cat, was confronted by a man who opposed the act of feeding stray cats.
The cat feeder, Jenken Haines, who later posted the encounter on Facebook on the Sayang Our Singapore’s Community Cats Facebook group, described encountering a Chinese man with his wife and young children surrounding the food left out for the community cat.
The cat lover approached the family, explaining that the food was intended for the community cat and requested that they leave it undisturbed.
In response, the man defensively asserted that they were not doing anything to the cat’s food. However, when the cat lover returned to the spot after a while, he observed the family leaving, and the man attempted to take a photo of him.
Curious about the man’s actions, the cat lover approached him and inquired about the reason behind taking a photo. The man responded by saying, “You take care of your cats, I take care of my children. You go away.”
Undeterred, the cat lover continued to question the man, leading to the revelation that the man believed feeding stray cats was illegal. In response, the cat lover decided to record the conversation. During the video, the man expressed his disapproval, stating, “This silly person feeds the cat, puts so much food there, you see, he still says, talks so much.”
When asked about the legality of feeding stray cats, the man insisted, “It is illegal to feed stray cats; you go to school to learn, ok.”
Following the video exchange, the man threatened to call the police, prompting the cat lover to walk away.
The cat lover, expressing concern about the man’s behavior, urged the public to share the video for awareness. The post raises questions about the legality and community perceptions surrounding the act of feeding stray cats in the area.
What the netizen said
I am the cat lover being scolded by the man in this video.
On Tuesday 12 Dec 2023, at around 8.10 pm, I went to Block 446 Clementi Avenue 3 to check on the food that was put there for the community cat.
I saw this chinese man with his wife and young children surrounding the food. I then explained them that it is meant for the community cat and if they could just leave it alone.
The man defensively said that “ no we are not doing anything to it”
After a while, I came back to the same spot and saw that the family was leaving. I then saw the man trying to take a photo of me.
I then went to ask him why he was trying to take a photo of me. He then said “ you take care of your cats, I take care of my children, you go away.
I continued to ask him why he took a photo of me. He then told me that cat feeding is illegal.
I decided to video him whilst having this conversation. He took a video of me too.
In the video he said” this silly person feed the cat, put so much food there, you see he still say, talk so much.
I asked him” why is it illegal to feed cat”
He said” it is illegal to feed stray cat , you go to school to learn ok.
After the video, he even said he will call the police. I then walked away.
Can we share this video for awareness. I have my concerns about this man. It seems likely that he lives in this area. Thank you
