MAN FACE CHARGES: POST ONLINE THREATENING POLICE OFFICER

A man will be charged today (Jan 19) for alleged offences under the Protection from Harassment Act and the Penal Code.

On 3 November 2020 and 11 January 2021, the individual reportedly uploaded a series of Instagram Stories including threatening, abusive, and insulting words directed towards a Police officer who was doing his duty.

On 13 November 2020, 23 February 2021, and 26 February 2021, the individual reportedly published statements on his Instagram and Facebook sites that were intended to offend the Christian community.

Penalties

The man will be charged with three offences punishable under Section 6(3) of the Protection from Harassment Act, which carries a fine of up to $5,000, imprisonment for a term of up to 12 months, or both, for allegedly posting a series of Instagram Stories with threatening, abusive, and insulting remarks towards a Police officer, who is a public servant, in relation to the execution of his duty.

The individual will be charged with an offence and two attempted offences of saying words with malicious intent to damage the religious sentiments of any person under Section 298 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to three years, a fine, or both.
