MAN FINDS IT HARD GOING BACK TO STUDIES AFTER FINISHING HIS NATIONAL SERVICE

Wondering if anyone can relate when it comes to assignments….

Anyone ever feel a high level of anxiety and no confidence when starting and doing assignments?

After coming out of NS and not studying for about 4 years, I feel so lost. I can’t remember of my academic tools and tricks that I used to use and feel so blur when it comes to writing or even starting an assignment. I even forgot how to do basic stuff like formatting and structure on Microsoft Word.

I used to usually get around 70-75% for my subjects from sec sch till Poly without much stress or worry. Now in my 1st year of uni I usually get between 60-80% for my assignments (depending on leniency of marker lol), but I feel so lost and anxious to actually do the assignments to the point that I usually get between 2-3 hours of sleep in the 3-4 weeks of assignment weeks that we have in a module.

Maybe I just have no confidence in myself to do academic work after being away from it for so many years even though I still have the ability to do work well. The lack of direction and feedback from lecturers is also really frustrating, I never know if I was in the right direction for learning or doing work until the module is over and all our grades are released. I hope this feeling of assignment/project anxiety goes away in time.

Also probably just me being a dumbass but even the help of ChatGPT has done little to help ease my anxiety, especially since most of my assignments are practical/research heavy and based on recent events and ChatGPT has no access to the internet and is updated till September 2021. It mostly only helps me with my writing style and grammar.

It feels that my process of doing things are just not right at all, I mostly just try to find the right structure and fill in content in whatever way I can.

Here are what netizens think:

  • I think you just have to keep at it, accept that it will take some time, the system sucks for guys who have to do ns. The other option is switch to a course which doesn’t require prior knowledge eg business or law or accounting. Doing stem subjects after ns is not easy. Fked up system. Just remember that other guys have done it before and your grades don’t matter once you start work
  • In uni, it’s even worse. Not only are students extremely smart, many also keep cross checking assignments, pushing up the bell curve even steeper. It’s also not unsurprising to see cases of plagiarism or even cheating (online exams) here.
  • No. Went to study masters after working for a few years, still (overly) confident of my work.
