I was very excited when I finally graduated Uni with my degree in liberal arts. I had worked hard to achieve my degree and was looking forward to taking a gap year to explore the world.
I had saved up a lot of money, and so I was able to travel to dozens of countries and experience different cultures and ways of life. I learned Spanish, French, and some other languages, and I felt like I was becoming a very well-rounded person.
Went for interview, was told degree not relevant
I was happy with the knowledge and experiences I had gained during my gap year but I knew that I still wanted to have a successful career and make something of myself. I took the time to update my resume and research job openings in my area.
I was excited to find a few openings that seemed to perfectly match my degree and experience. I applied for the positions and was quickly called in for an interview.
This is when I realized that my degree was not as highly regarded as I had thought. The interviewer began asking me questions about my degree and why I had chosen it.
When I began to explain that I had chosen it because I liked learning about different cultures and ideas, the interviewer seemed unimpressed. He asked me why I had chosen a degree that was not related to my career goals.
I was surprised by the interviewer’s attitude and felt like I was being judged for my choice of degree. I had not realized that this degree would not be seen as a valuable asset on my resume.
I tried to explain that I had worked hard to get good grades and had taken the time to learn different languages and gain valuable cultural knowledge. However, the interviewer seemed unconvinced and told me that my degree was not relevant to the job.
I was disappointed and frustrated by the interviewer’s attitude. It felt like I had wasted my time and money on a degree that would not help me in my job search.
I had to face the fact that my degree did not hold as much weight as more job-specific degrees. I was disheartened but I was determined to move forward and find a job that would use my skills and knowledge.
I don’t know if I will eventually land a job but I am hopeful.
