According to a media release, a 39-year-old man pleaded guilty on the 09 Sep 2020 to a robbery charge. Apparently, the man and two others had plotted to rob a Malaysian man after deceiving the victim into believing that they had bitcoin for sales.
The case of the two others involved is still pending.
According to the court documents, the victim arrived in Singapore on the 08 Apr 2018 with the intention to buy bitcoins from sellers in Singapore. He brought along a total of $365,000 in cash with him.
After one of the suspects found out about the victim’s intention, he then engaged the man to assist him in robbing the victim while posing as a bitcoin seller. In the process, the man assaulted the victim before snatching the victim’s backpack.
For his assistance, the man was given $10,000 as a reward. The man is currently out on bail for $30,000 and will return to court for sentencing on 11 Sep 2020. If convicted, the man could face a jail term up to 14 years with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
