MAN HELPED FORGED $18,500 OF $100 NOTES, SENTENCED TO JAIL AND CANE

There are all sorts of crimes, but a crime such as forgery of Singapore dollars is not as commonly heard.

Previously, a man had used counterfeit $100 notes to buy TOTO at Ubi.

Two men hatched a plan to forget $100 notes to buy contraband cigarettes and it later became a plan to make a total of $18,500 worth of $100 notes.

According to Straits Times, 45-year-old Mahadi Ab Latif who works as a driver used an empty warehouse as their base of operation to create the fake $100 notes.

He was eventually arrested and found with $18,500 of counterfeit notes and a penknife was also seized as evidence, the knife was used to cut the notes.

Sentencing

Mahid pleaded guilty to conspiracy to forge current notes and two other charges under the misused of drugs acts, reported Straits Times.

He was sentenced to 6 years and nine months in jail along with 3 strokes of the rotan.

The Police take a serious view of any person found criminally involved in counterfeit currency. Below are the punishments for the more common offences related to counterfeit currency:

  • Forging or counterfeiting currency or bank notes under Section 489A of the Penal Code 1871 – is punishable with an imprisonment term of up to 20 years, and a fine.
  • Using as genuine counterfeit currency notes under Section 489B of the Penal Code 1871 – is punishable with an imprisonment term of up to 20 years, and a fine.
  • Possession of forged or counterfeit currency or bank notes under Section 489C of the Penal Code 1871 – is punishable with an imprisonment term of up to 15 years, and a fine.
  • Making or possessing instruments or materials for forging or counterfeiting currency or bank notes under Section 489D of the Penal Code 1871 – is punishable with an imprisonment of up to 20 years, and a fine.
