Man, 69, Jailed 10 Months for Trespassing & Stealing Slippers from Private Homes in Nighttime Burglary Spree
In a bizarre string of nocturnal break-ins, a 69-year-old man with a history of similar crimes was sentenced to 10 months’ jail after trespassing into two private residential properties in an attempt to steal valuables. The case, heard in court recently, highlighted the lengths Karis Bin Kasmond went to evade detection — and how his efforts ultimately failed when he triggered a security alarm.
Nighttime Trespassing Spree Across Private Homes
According to court documents and a report by Shin Min Daily News, the incident took place in the early hours of Nov. 24, 2024. Karis, determined to steal cash and jewellery, travelled by bus from Jalan Batu estate to the National University of Singapore area. He then navigated several ditches, including areas near the former Institute of Technical Education and the former Warren Golf Course and Country Club, to access the private residential neighbourhood along Sandwich and Maidstone Roads.
Between 1am and 3:30am, Karis slipped through an unlocked gate at a house on Maidstone Road. Finding the main door locked, he continued prowling until he reached the backyard of another home, entering through a small door. During this time, he helped himself to a pair of white slippers left outside, which he wore as he moved through the properties.
Alarm Foils Theft, Leads to His Capture
Karis’s plan unravelled when he attempted to enter yet another house, inadvertently setting off the security alarm. The sudden blare and activation of outdoor lights startled him, prompting him to hide in another nearby residence. There, he swapped the white slippers for a black pair before fleeing the scene. His escape route took him through a gutter leading back to the Ayer Rajah Expressway, leaving him soaked and forcing him to change into a dry set of clothes he had stashed for his getaway.
Police investigations later confirmed Karis had trespassed into at least two homes, with clear intent to steal valuables. Fortunately, no cash or jewellery was taken beyond the slippers. His antics, however, created significant alarm among residents.
Court Considers His Criminal History
Karis faced a total of seven charges, including four counts brought by the prosecution, with the remaining offences taken into consideration during sentencing. The court noted his prior criminal record, which included a hefty 14-year preventive detention sentence in 2010 for similar trespassing offences.
During the hearing, Karis requested the judge impose a harsh sentence on him, a rare plea that underscored either his remorse or resignation to the seriousness of his actions. The court sentenced him to 10 months’ jail, acknowledging both the severity of his repeated offences and the potential danger posed to homeowners.
Reminder on Home Security & Crime Prevention
This case serves as a stark reminder for homeowners to keep gates and doors secured, even during the late-night hours. With property crimes still a concern in Singapore’s residential estates, investing in reliable security systems and lighting can deter opportunistic intruders.
For residents concerned about suspicious activities in their neighbourhoods, do not hesitate to contact the police or dial 999 for immediate assistance.
