Couples have arguments all the time but getting physical is definitely wrong.
On Thursday, Apr 7) 24-year-old Shawn Tan Jia Jun was jailed for two weeks after he assaulted his pregnant girlfriend.
The initial sentencing was $3,500 but it was later overturned by the High Court and he was given a jail sentence due to the severity of his crime.
Background
According to TODAY news, the incident happened back in July 2020 and his girlfriend was already nine weeks pregnant during the incident.
The argument started while they were discussing the pregnancy and the discussion escalated into getting physical, after pushing the victim onto the bed he punched and kicked the woman in her abdomen and also hit her in the face.
The fight stopped after his mother heard them fighting.
The victim seek medical attention the next day and luckily the foetus was not injured but the woman eventually decided to abort the child.
Forgiveness
The victim said that she forgives Tan for his actions and said that she will eventually marry him.
How the fine of $3,500 was overturned
He was fined last year $3,500 in October last year after pleading guilty to voluntarily causing hurt.
However, High Court Judge overturned the sentence on Thursday (April 7) stating that the punishment was inadequate.
Although the defendant’s lawyer tried to dismiss the jail sentence stating that the sentence will harm the couples future the Judge rejected this argument.
