I still remember the moment it happened. I was scrolling through my Instagram feed when I saw a picture of my father holding out a shiny Rolex watch to me.
He was so proud of himself for being able to afford the watch for me, and he wanted to show it off. He captioned the post with something like “My son deserves the best, and I’m proud to be able to provide it for him”.
At first, I was elated. I felt so lucky to have a father who was willing to buy me such an expensive gift. I wanted to show off to my friends, so I posted a picture of myself wearing the watch with the caption “My dad got me the best gift ever!”
Unfortunately, the reaction to the post was not what I expected. Instead of being congratulated on my good fortune, I was met with a barrage of comments telling me that I was a spoiled brat and that I shouldn’t be so proud of something that I didn’t earn. People were even suggesting that my father was using me to show off his wealth.
At first, I was embarrassed and angry. How could people be so rude? I had worked hard in school, and I had always been responsible with my money. I had never asked my father for anything expensive, only this one time for a Rolex and my father had never given me anything like this before.
But then, I started to think about it differently. I realized that my father was just trying to show me that he loved me by giving me something expensive. He was proud of his ability to provide for me and wanted to show it off. And, even though I didn’t earn the money to buy the watch, I was still thankful for my father’s generosity.
I also realized that the people who were making fun of me were probably jealous that they didn’t have a father who was willing to provide for them like mine was for me. I understood their reactions, but I also knew that I didn’t need to defend myself.
So, I took a step back and decided to be grateful for the gift. I was thankful that my dad had provided me with such a nice gift, and I was proud that I had a father who was willing to provide for me. I still have the watch, and when I look at it, I’m reminded of my father’s love and generosity.
I’m also thankful for the people who made fun of me because their comments made me think a little deeper about the situation. I was able to view it from a different perspective, and I was able to appreciate my father’s generosity even more.
