A 38-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a female barista and later attacking a security officer at a mall in Chinatown, in an incident that left bystanders stepping in to restrain him before police arrived.

The confrontation reportedly took place on May 4 at around 1pm at 18 Cross, a mixed retail and showroom space in the Chinatown area, according to local media reports.

Witnesses said the situation escalated quickly after the man, who was initially seated inside a car showroom café, was approached by a female barista who asked if he required assistance, Shin Min Daily News reported.

Without warning, the man allegedly threw two punches at her, causing immediate alarm among staff and customers in the area.

Bystanders Step In To Subdue Aggressive Behaviour

A 48-year-old car salesman at the scene said he was alerted to the incident by a colleague while attending to a customer.

He described how multiple bystanders rushed to intervene after the alleged attack on the barista.

One of the witnesses, who had training in Muay Thai, stepped in to restrain the man using a controlled hold after he appeared to continue acting aggressively.

The witness, who has reportedly trained in Muay Thai for more than 30 years and has been coaching since 2017, said he used a gentler restraining technique to avoid causing unnecessary injury while ensuring the man could not break free.

The group eventually managed to subdue him and handed him over to security personnel at the mall.

Man Allegedly Attacked Security Officers Again

However, the situation reportedly escalated again about 15 minutes later when the man allegedly struggled once more and attacked security officers who were handling him.

A passer-by described the man shouting and resisting while security staff attempted to maintain control.

Emergency services were subsequently called to the scene, with both police officers and paramedics arriving shortly after the situation worsened.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force also attended to an injured security officer at the location.

Barista And Security Officer Taken To Hospital

In response to media queries, the police confirmed that a 42-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman were conveyed conscious to hospital following the incident.

The female barista was reportedly injured during the initial attack, with witnesses describing visible swelling and redness on her face after she was punched.

The condition of the security officer was not fully disclosed, though he was seen receiving medical attention at the scene.

Authorities later confirmed that the 38-year-old suspect was arrested for public nuisance and is also assisting investigations for voluntarily causing hurt.

Police Investigations Ongoing

Police investigations into the incident are still ongoing as authorities work to establish the full sequence of events leading up to the assault.

Cases involving public disturbances and workplace violence have increasingly drawn attention in Singapore, particularly in busy commercial areas such as Chinatown where foot traffic is high throughout the day.

Officers have reminded members of the public to seek help from security personnel or call the police immediately when encountering aggressive behaviour, rather than attempting to intervene directly if the situation appears dangerous.

The case remains under active investigation.
