A Singaporean guy recently posted online after he felt that the thing he regretted in life was having a family and a kid. He stated on how everyone looks down on him and if he could turn back time, he would focus on building his career and putting accumulating great wealth as his priority.
Here is the full story.
I am in my late 30s. Been working for 10+ years. Only earns $4k a month. Only 80k savings. no car. stays in a 4-room HDB.
Friends: Most of my friends are doing well or relatively well in life. They earn at least $8k/month. My observation is that my friends will usually listen to the richest man / highest paid salary-guy in the group. (i.e. friends will ignore and scorn at me for saying “dont give up, you still have change as long as you try hard”. But when another rich guy says the same phrase, the same phrase literally becomes gold.)
Parents/Siblings: Seen as parents/siblings as the most buay kan kid with no achievement in life. My siblings are doing well in life (or at least live life very comfortable). My siblings tend to look down to me… or maybe i am too sensitive? They like to say things like “I have money to buy this and that”, “Wah are you not getting a car? Still same salary?”
Family: This is the most depressing aspect of my life. My kid asked me why their friends got car to send them to sch and home, why papa no car. Wife also start sending me their colleagues/ friends buying stocks / cryto and earning hundreds/thousands of dollars per day. She will make remark, with a disappointed/annoyed face, “wah they one day also earn more than what you earn in 1 month.”
This is just my life (given my SES, income, incapability and ignorance). I do believe there’re many others out there who are doing well in life and having a happy family. For myself, I truly regret starting a family, and worst to have a kid. If I could turn back time, I would not have a family first but focus on building my career, accumulating great wealth and climbing social status.
