Jani Basha Mohamed Nizamudeen, a 41-year-old permanent resident, pleaded guilty to one charge of causing grievous hurt and was sentenced on 8 December to 1-week imprisonment.
Another charge of riding a PMD on the road was considered during his sentencing.
What happened?
On 19 July 2019, at about 2pm, Jany was riding his e-scooter on the way to Masjid Chulia at Chinatown from his home.
He was riding legally on the footpath, before switching over to ride on the left lane of South Bridge Road because there were many people on the footpath and he was getting late for his prayers.
Jani then rode against the traffic flow, although there were no vehicles at the time because the cars had stopped at a traffic junction nearby.
The victim, Madam Ng Geong Yan, 65-years-old, was trying to cross the road after checking for traffic and her back was facing Jani.
Jani didn’t keep a proper lookout and crashed into the woman, who fell onto the road as a result of the impact.
Jani then called the police and asked if he needed to wait there because the paramedics had already told him that the police were informed.
The victim was then conveyed to hospital with a broken wrist and head injuries.
Jani was ordered to pay $514 to the victim for her medical expenses, which was rejected by the victim as she had already claimed from her insurance.
