I’m a Singaporean who recently got scolded for my ‘returning money to the government’ that was given to me to Singapore Pools.
It all began when I was watching the FIFA World Cup. I’d been following the tournament since it began, and I was excited when the final game between France and Argentina was about to start.
I had always wanted to bet on the World Cup, but I didn’t have enough money to do so. But the govt recently gave a one-time payment to citizens for some GST thing.
I thought this was a great opportunity to make some money and bet on the World Cup. So I use the ‘free cash’ and try my luck.
After I received the money, I immediately started betting on the World Cup. I used the money to place bets on various teams and matches. I was feeling confident and was sure I was going to make a good return on my investment.
However, things didn’t go as planned. I ended up losing all the money I had put in and was left with nothing. I felt embarrassed and disappointed in myself.
My friends have been mocking me since then and they called me a dumb***.
But I told my friend SG pools is a non-profit and the money they made are use for social service, community development, sports, arts, education and health sectors.
So in a way I am helping my country… I guess.
