A 48-year-old man was caught on video slapping his elderly wheelchair-bound father at 409 Ang Mo Kio Market and Food Centre on Father’s Day (18 June) and is being investigated by the police, according to Shin MIn Daily News.
According to witnesses and video footage that was reviewed by Shin Min Daily News, the altercation ensued after the elderly man scolded his son.
The son, dressed in a red shirt, responded to the reprimand by standing up, approaching his father, and delivering a forceful slap across his face in full view of other diners.
Displaying an air of arrogance, the son then walked away, audaciously instructing his father to contact the police, which the latter later did.
A female stall assistant nearby revealed that the man’s mother worked at a drinks stall in the hawker centre, while the unemployed son relied on daily financial support from his mother.
The constant requests for money had strained the father’s patience, leading to the confrontation on that particular day.
Following the slap, the son’s mother intervened and scolded her husband, placing some blame on him for provoking their son.
It was disclosed that both parents were over 70 years old, and the father’s mobility was severely limited, requiring him to use a wheelchair.
When approached by reporters, the mother, who continued working at the drinks stall, stated that her husband had been discharged from the hospital.
She declined to provide further comments on the incident. However, it was revealed that the father had been absent from the hawker centre for several days following the confrontation.
The Singapore Police Force confirmed receiving a call for help regarding the incident at Block 409 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10.
The victim was sent to Sengkang General Hospital conscious while the 48-year-old man is being investigated by the police.
