MAN STEALS JEWELERY IN WOODLANDS: OWNER SAYS WORTH $1000, SURE BOH

A suspected theft incident at a neighbourhood stall in Woodlands has raised fresh concerns about opportunistic crime in Singapore, after a man was caught on CCTV allegedly pocketing jewellery worth around S$1,000 in under a minute.

The case, which took place at a residential block market, highlights how even brief moments of unattended retail displays can be exploited, despite Singapore’s reputation for low crime rates. Authorities have since confirmed that investigations are ongoing.

Man Seen Taking Jewellery While Stall Left Unattended

According to footage captured on surveillance cameras, a man wearing dark sunglasses and holding an umbrella initially walked past a jewellery stall located at Block 303 Woodlands Street 31. The display appeared to be covered with cloth, possibly as a precaution while the owner stepped away.

Moments later, the man returned to the stall and discreetly lifted a portion of the fabric covering. He then appeared to remove several items from the display, including what was believed to be a silver chain.

What stood out in the footage was how the act went unnoticed. Several passers-by walked past the stall during the incident, while nearby shoppers remained seemingly unaware of what was happening just metres away.

After taking the items, the man calmly repositioned the cloth covering and walked off without drawing attention.

Theft Took Less Than a Minute, Owner Was Away Briefly

The stall owner had reportedly stepped away to use the restroom for about five minutes when the incident occurred. Within that short window, five silver necklaces were allegedly taken.

A nearby shop assistant later estimated the total value of the missing jewellery to be approximately S$1,000. The speed and simplicity of the act have sparked discussions about retail security, especially in open-market environments where stalls may not always be manned continuously.

The incident was reported to the Singapore Police Force on the same day. In response, police confirmed that a 58-year-old man is currently assisting with investigations.

Ongoing Police Investigation and Public Vigilance

While Singapore continues to maintain one of the lowest crime rates globally, incidents like this serve as a reminder that theft can still occur under the right circumstances.

Retailers, particularly those operating in heartland areas, may need to review their security measures, including the use of CCTV systems, secure display cases, or temporary stall coverage when stepping away.

Members of the public are also encouraged to stay alert and report any suspicious behaviour, especially in crowded areas where distractions can make such acts easier to carry out.

Police investigations into the case are ongoing.
