In recent times, the strong Singapore dollar has led to an influx of Singaporeans flocking to malls in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, in search of what they perceive as “cheap” bargains. However, one TikToker has a few words of caution for his fellow citizens.
Don’t be “jiao lang”
In a TikTok video shared by @sgkakinang on October 31, a passionate voice emerged to address the behavior of Singaporeans who shop in Malaysia. The man’s message is clear: Singaporeans should not be “birds” in Malaysia. What does he mean by this?
The TikToker expressed his concern over the way Singaporeans behave while shopping in Malaysia. He pointed out that they often engage in excessive bragging, saying “cheap, cheap, cheap,” much like the chirping of birds.
Winning the lottery game
In his two-minute rant, the TikToker emphasized that Singaporeans had effectively “won a lottery game” by being born in the prosperous nation of Singapore. He encourages them to be humble about their good fortune. But what is the significance of this “lottery game”?
Winning the lottery game, in this context, refers to the advantages that Singaporeans have due to their strong currency and economic stability. While this may lead to great shopping deals, is there a moral obligation that comes with it?
Humility in Prosperity
The TikToker’s message is clear: Singaporeans are not “saving” the Malaysian economy by spending money there. Instead, they are helping themselves.
The exchange rate, as of November 1, stands at RM3.51 to S$1, prompting many Singaporeans to revel in the “cheap” shopping opportunities just across the border. But is this enthusiasm leading to unintended consequences?
One of the driving factors behind this shopping spree is the strength of the Singaporean dollar. Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, the GIC, and the government’s prudent economic policies have contributed to the remarkable rise of the Singaporean dollar.
Apart from being perceived as insensitive to Malaysians’ feelings, this “birdmen” mentality can have other negative consequences. The TikToker suggested that the excessive boasting may lead to store owners increasing their prices.
