A 60 year old jobless man by the name of Lim Kok Inn was sentenced to four weeks of imprisonment today (8 Mar) as he had pleaded guilty to one count of wrongful confinement of his mother’s tenant, a 56 year old Benjamin Kwek.
He had confined Kwek for about two hours.
What happened
Lim, who does not live together with his mother and is jobless would go to his mother’s flat to demand money from her occasionally.
His mother had already moved to his sister’s place but did not inform him when the incident happened on 20 Aug 2021 when Lim went to look for his mother but no one answered the door.
This caused Lim to lock the metal gate with a padlock and knock the door repeatedly to no avail.
He returned to the unit at 9am and repeatedly pressed the bell when Kwek finally opened the door.
Lim then told Kwek that he had locked him up and demanded that Kwek call Lim’s sister which he obliged.
When she picked up the phone, Kwek passed the phone to Lim and Lim demanded $200 from her before he takes the padlock out from the gate.
Lim then asked Kwek for $200 to which Kwek replied that he only had $100 on him and asked him to call his sister again.
He eventually accepted $100 from Kwek and took the padlock off, saying that he will come back the following day to collect the other $100.
Kwek then told Lim to go and settle the issue with his sister and eventually, Lim’s sister returned the $100 to Kwek.
Penalties
It was heard in court that Lim was a recalcitrant, having committed offences previously.
For his crime, he could have been given a jail term of up to three years and/or fined.
