I have been working as an accountant for the past five years. I have always been a hard worker and have put in extra hours to ensure that everything is done to the highest standards. For this reason, I was confident that I would be promoted to the next level in my company.
However, recently I was passed over for the promotion. My colleague, who had worked at the company for a shorter amount of time than I had, was promoted instead. I was shocked and angry when I heard the news. I had worked so hard and had expected to be rewarded for it.
Bootlick
After some investigation, I soon realised why I had been overlooked for the promotion. It turned out that my colleague was a bootlicker. He had been schmoozing with the higher-ups in the company and had been flattering them in order to get ahead. He had been telling them how great they were and how much he admired them. This had obviously worked in his favour and he had been rewarded with the promotion.
I was so angry that I had been overlooked for the promotion and that someone who had been bootlicking his way up the ladder had been preferred over me. I was determined to prove that I was the better candidate and that I deserved the promotion more than my colleague.
I decided to double my efforts and work even harder to prove that I was the right person for the job. I put in extra hours and made sure that everything I did was to the highest standards. I made sure that I was always punctual and that I never missed a deadline.
I also made sure to stay up to date with the latest industry trends and news. I read up on the latest developments in the field and made sure that I was always one step ahead of the competition. I made sure that I had a thorough understanding of the company’s products and services, as well as its competitors.
After a few months of hard work, I felt stupid.
I started to look for a new job and found another that was offering me 25% more salary, which is a very good deal considering the industry I am in.
After I submitted my resignation, the company wanted to counter offer me 26% more and I felt that it was kind of an insult and proceeded to quit.
Hard work is nothing if no one appreciates you.
