In a shocking incident that unfolded in Penampang, a retired airline pilot experienced a harrowing moment when his car was stolen while his mother remained inside. Initially believing it to be a mere accident, Otigil and his sister exited their vehicle to assess the situation. The driver of the other car, a man, claimed he had fallen asleep at the wheel and requested assistance in towing his vehicle. Trusting the stranger, Otigil began documenting the incident and sought options for towing.

However, the situation took a drastic turn when the man suddenly dashed towards Otigil’s car, jumped in, and sped away with Otigil’s mother still seated in the back. “I attempted to intervene, but I was thrown to the ground, injuring my knees and elbow,” Otigil recounted, highlighting the terrifying nature of the incident.

A Desperate Chase

Despite his injuries, Otigil managed to flag down a passing vehicle and pursued the thief. Approximately two kilometres down the road, he discovered his mother abandoned by the roadside. Thankfully, she was shaken but unharmed. The suspect, however, made off with the stolen vehicle and Otigil’s sister’s handbag, which contained vital personal items including her identity card, several bank cards, a driving licence, and RM650 in cash.

Following the distressing event, Otigil rushed to the Penampang police station to ensure his mother’s safety and file a report regarding the theft. Penampang’s Officer in Charge of Police District (OCPD), Superintendent Sammy Newton, confirmed that a report was received shortly after the incident occurred.

Superintendent Newton stated that the case is currently under investigation under Section 379A of the Penal Code, which pertains to vehicle theft and carries a potential penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment along with a fine. He assured the public that efforts to locate the suspect and recover the stolen vehicle are actively underway.

In light of the incident, Superintendent Newton urged anyone with information to reach out to the investigating officer, Inspector Mohd Anis Abdullah, at 013-6365734. He also cautioned the public against sharing unverified or false information on social media, as such actions could impede investigations and create unnecessary panic within the community.

This alarming event serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and caution, particularly in situations that may initially appear benign. As the investigation continues, the community remains hopeful for a swift resolution and the safe recovery of the stolen vehicle.
