Mercedes Crashes Into Road Divider Along Punggol North Avenue On Day 1 of CNY @ 4AM

In the early hours of Feb. 17, a grey Mercedes collided with a road divider along Punggol North Avenue, leaving debris scattered across the road but fortunately causing no injuries. The incident was later shared online after a video was uploaded to the Facebook page SGRV on Feb. 18.

The footage captured the Mercedes parked on the road with its hazard lights on. A man in a red shirt and white pants was seen picking up fragments of the damaged green guardrail, while a motorcyclist who had been filming stopped to help with the cleanup. When asked if he had been feeling sleepy prior to the accident, the man admitted he had been “a bit sleepy just now.” The front portion of the car appeared heavily damaged, and the vehicle’s licence plate was missing.

Authorities Confirm No Injuries

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed it was alerted to the accident at around 4:05am at the junction of Punggol North Avenue and Punggol Way. SCDF assessed the man for minor injuries, but he declined hospital treatment. Police also confirmed the incident, noting that the car appeared to have self-skidded along the road.

A 51-year-old male driver is currently assisting with investigations. While there were no injuries reported, the incident caused damage to multiple sections of the road divider and created a temporary hazard for other motorists.

Road Safety Concerns Highlighted

Authorities emphasised that fatigue and drowsy driving remain major risks, particularly in the early morning hours. Even minor lapses in attention can result in accidents that damage property and endanger road users. Police urged drivers to remain vigilant, avoid distractions, and ensure they are well-rested before getting behind the wheel.

Lessons for Drivers and Motorists

This accident serves as a reminder of the importance of alert and responsible driving. Road dividers and guardrails are installed to enhance safety, and collisions with such structures can be costly and dangerous. Drivers are encouraged to maintain safe speeds, follow road signs, and take breaks if they feel drowsy, especially during low-traffic hours.

With Singapore’s roads seeing constant traffic flow, incidents like this underscore the need for continued public awareness about road safety, adherence to traffic regulations, and responsible driving behaviour to prevent future accidents.
