A mysterious masked vigilante dubbed the “Mexican Batman” has become the centre of attention in Mexico after allegedly hunting down suspected motorcycle thieves, assaulting them, and leaving them bound to street poles.
The incidents have been reported in the municipality of Lagos de Moreno, located in the Mexican state of Jalisco. Authorities say the first known case occurred on June 13, with at least five more similar incidents recorded over the following ten days.
Police officers responding to the scenes discovered men tied to lamp posts using strong adhesive tape. In several cases, motorcycles believed to be stolen were found nearby, raising suspicions about the victims’ involvement in theft-related crimes.
Suspects Marked and Displayed in Public
Images and videos circulating online show some of the detained individuals with cat whiskers drawn on their faces and the Spanish word “ratero”, meaning “thief”, written across their foreheads. One particularly striking case involved two men being tied back-to-back beneath a roadside sign.
Local media reports suggest the masked vigilante mainly operates at night, making identification difficult and fuelling speculation about whether the acts are being carried out by a single individual or an organised group.
The unusual incidents have quickly gone viral across social media platforms, where many users have praised the so-called “Batman” as a figure delivering justice in a community frustrated by rising motorcycle thefts.
Authorities Treat Victims as Assault Cases
Despite the public fascination, law enforcement officials have stressed that the individuals found tied up are currently being treated as victims of assault.
According to Juan Pablo Hernández, authorities have identified two vehicles that may be connected to the attacks and are actively searching for those responsible.
“We are actively searching for the person who carried out these attacks,” Hernández said.
The men discovered bound to the poles were released by police and received medical treatment. Officials have not disclosed whether separate criminal investigations have been launched into the alleged motorcycle thefts connected to the cases.
Public Support Divides Opinion
The emergence of the masked vigilante has generated strong reactions throughout the region. Many residents, frustrated by increasing thefts, view the mysterious figure as a hero stepping in where they believe authorities have fallen short.
However, legal experts and human rights advocates have warned that vigilante justice can create serious risks. They argue that such actions bypass due process, increase the likelihood of violence, and may undermine confidence in the formal justice system.
For now, police continue investigating the incidents while attempting to determine the identity of the person — or group — behind the growing legend of Mexico’s “Batman”. As the search continues, the debate over crime, punishment and public frustration with law enforcement shows no signs of fading.
