A 37-year-old woman who disappeared from South Korea’s Jeju Island has been found dead more than three months after her family reported her missing.
Jang Mi Ran was reported missing on May 12, prompting relatives to seek help from police to locate her. However, the investigation took a troubling turn after the officer assigned to the case allegedly claimed that he had personally contacted Jang.
According to Korean media reports, the officer, identified as Bu, allegedly told Jang’s relatives that he had spoken to her and that she was safe. He reportedly claimed that she had also indicated that she did not want further contact.
Officer Allegedly Closed Missing Person Case
Based on the alleged communication, the missing person case was subsequently closed. However, investigators later discovered that there was apparently no record of a telephone call between Jang and the officer.
The discovery raised serious questions over how the case had been handled and why authorities had accepted the officer’s account without apparently confirming that Jang had actually been contacted.
The officer was subsequently arrested in connection with the allegations. However, he was later released after a court ruled that his detention had been unlawful, according to reports.
Jang remained missing for a total of 104 days before her body was eventually discovered close to her residence. The circumstances surrounding her death and disappearance are now expected to form part of the investigation.
Similar Case Raises Further Questions
The allegations against the officer have also prompted scrutiny over whether this was an isolated incident. Korean media reports claim that Bu had allegedly handled another missing person case involving a 60-year-old individual.
That person was also eventually found dead, raising concerns about whether similar procedures or failures may have occurred during the earlier investigation.
The latest case is likely to attract further attention as authorities examine the officer’s actions, the handling of missing-person reports and whether opportunities to locate Jang alive may have been missed.
The investigation will also need to establish the circumstances leading to Jang’s death, as well as determine whether anyone else was involved. Further details are expected as investigators continue examining the case.
