The monkeypox virus is spreading across Europe, with signs of the virus starting to spread across the globe.
Sweden has just reported their first case of the monkeypox virus, after infections were reported in the UK, US, Canada, Spain, and Portugal.
The French Health Ministry said on 19 May that they have also detected their first suspected case of the virus in the country.
Italy has also reported a case of infection in a young adult who had travelled to the Canary Islands and returned to Italy.
Monkeypox is generally categorised into two main strains, namely the Congo strain and the West African strain.
The Congo strain is more severe, with a mortality rate of up to 10%, while the West African strain has a fatality rate in 1% of the cases.
Monkeypox is a virus that results in a bumpy rash, and also causes fever symptoms.
The Swedish Public Health Agency released a statement saying that one person in the Stockholm region has been confirmed to be infected with monkeypox, with the infected described as not being seriously ill but has been given care.
An investigator and infectious disease doctor at the agency said that they still don’t know where the person was infected and that an investigation is currently underway.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said that they are monitoring the situation closely and they are expecting to publish their first risk assessment report early next week.
they also added that suspected cases should be isolated and tested, as well as notified in a prompt manner.
The World Health Organisation also said that they were looking at the issue closely, as cases continue to rise.
