A heartbreaking incident in Johor has captured the attention of many online after a mother elephant was seen staying beside her dead calf following a fatal road accident in Mersing.
The emotional scene unfolded along the road near Kampung Pengkalan Bukit Asli in the early hours of July 1, where a young elephant calf was struck by a vehicle. Despite efforts by authorities, the calf did not survive the collision.
According to local officials, the mother elephant remained close to the area for an extended period after the accident, appearing reluctant to leave her offspring behind. Videos and photographs of the grieving animal have since circulated widely on social media, drawing sympathy from netizens across the region.
Authorities Respond to Incident
Mersing Fire and Rescue Department personnel confirmed that the calf died as a result of the crash. Emergency responders were deployed to the scene after receiving reports of the accident.
Officials said the mother elephant continued to linger near the location even after the calf’s death, prompting authorities to monitor the situation closely for safety reasons.
The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) was subsequently notified and took over the handling of the wildlife-related aspects of the case.
Mother Elephant Monitored Before Release
Following the incident, wildlife officers carried out measures to ensure the safety of both the elephant and nearby road users. The calf was later buried while the mother elephant underwent monitoring procedures.
Authorities fitted the adult elephant with a tracking collar before releasing her back into the surrounding forest. The device will allow wildlife officers to monitor her movements and reduce the risk of future encounters near busy roads.
Several videos shared online showed the elephant remaining near the accident site, with some motorists slowing down or stopping as they passed. The situation reportedly caused temporary traffic congestion as drivers exercised caution around the distressed animal.
Driver Injured in Separate Crash Details
The tragic incident also resulted in injuries to the driver involved in the collision. Earlier reports indicated that a 31-year-old man was hurt after his vehicle struck the elephant calf before veering off the road.
The car subsequently plunged into a ravine estimated to be about five metres deep. Emergency responders attended to the injured driver and provided assistance at the scene.
The incident has once again highlighted the ongoing challenges surrounding human-wildlife interactions in Malaysia, particularly in areas where roads cut through natural elephant habitats. Conservationists have long warned that increasing development and traffic can raise the risk of such encounters, placing both animals and motorists in danger.
Many social media users have expressed sadness over the footage of the mother elephant’s apparent grief, with the images serving as a powerful reminder of the impact road accidents can have on wildlife and their families.
