MOTHER IN LAW THINKS GIRL IS GOLDDIGGER AS SHE WANTS GOLD JEWELLERY FOR WEDDING

This is follow up on the wedding banquet post a few days ago.

TBH I don’t think she will want to foot the bill and we don’t want her to foot the bill too. She will definitely bring it up for the rest of our lives.

Currently my MIL seems to think I am a gold digger when we requested for Guo Da Li with 4 Dian Jin and Pin Jin, along with chinese wedding cakes and coconut whatnots. I don’t know if I’m overthinking it as she mentioned this at least 4 times within 6 hours that she didn’t have these jewelry when she got married and seems to be hinting that I shouldn’t be asking as well.

She didn’t look very invested during the shopping trip and kept using her phone. On my part I’m also partially at fault since I can’t keep a conversation going with her – i find it very hard since she’s not a straightforward person, there is always a hidden objective when she talks about any topic just like how she tries to push all convo to banquet…or how she thinks I’m not pushing myself enough at work when I don’t work weekends / how I didn’t force my fiancé to live a healthy lifestyle / make my fiancé do things she wanted etc.

We kept the jewellery budget to under $5k as per her budget, but it really didn’t feel like a happy affair. Felt like she was forced to buy me an expensive gift and hence she’s expecting us to fulfil the banquet as per her wishes.

Is it normal to have these kind of awkward situations during Chinese weddings? I can’t ask my fiancé to clarify all these with her as they don’t have a very good relationship and it’s most likely going to explode into something very unhappy if he knows about it.

How do you deal with MIL
