A woman claimed that her mother was scammed of her life savings after clicking on an SMS from a scammer.
The incident happened back in November and it sounds like a substantial amount of money is gone.
Should other banks also pay their victims?
In recent events, OCBC bank has started paying out to victims of scams.
The OCBC incident resulted in the loss of $8.5 million in a total of 469 victims.
Victim’s of scams are bound to think if other banks will also assist their own customers. Banks are not obligated to pay back the victim but OCBC’s “goodwill payment” has helped the victims and it’s a painful lesson for both the victims and the bank.
Here is what the victim’s daughter said:
Hi guys! Would really appreciate your advice on this issue.
Last year November, my mum was scammed by DBS Bicentennial Commemorative Note Scam. Her entire life saving is gone within seconds, we called the bank and made a police report immediately but till today DBS has given NO UPDATE.
And was only notified by the police officer today of the outcome after I initiated the call. This incident has fractured my family’s relationship. It’s a life-changing amount of money to us. Hope there is someone that could help us with this issue

Here is what netizens think:
- Have to call in and chase dbs for an update. Fraud cases usually takes up anywhere between 3-6 months of investigation. If lucky, you might just be able to get back the funds.
- Normally those scam are overseas scam very hard to catch. Don’t expect bank to return you the money coz once gone is gone
- All of us make mistakes, we should just learn from the mistake and move on, don’t depress your mother further by having family disputes because of this issue.
- There’s no free lunch in this world. Pls stop falling for these scams. All we need is just some common sense to realise which is true and not. Pls, for god sake, stop clicking on these scam links. This is how people gets cheated
- I wonder how much money got scammed from DBS accounts from this and other scams.I received messages from “DBS” saying that my ATM card got blocked….I didn’t fall into the trap. But am sure some people did. It can’t be that only OCBC account holders are naive.
