On 30 May, vigilant ICA officers at Tuas Checkpoint foiled an attempt to smuggle in 12 live dogs and 1 live cat via a Malaysia-registered lorry transporting precast concrete product.
The case was detected after our officers directed the lorry for further checks where they uncovered 12 live dogs hidden underneath the make-shift bed in the vehicle cabin. One live cat was also found hidden inside the tools compartment of the cabin.
The Malaysian lorry driver was referred to the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS), a cluster of NParks, for further investigation.
The dogs and cat will be quarantined at AVS’ Animal Quarantine Centre to be cared for and monitored for any illnesses including exotic diseases. As investigations are ongoing, they are currently not available for rehoming.
Safeguarding Singapore’s borders is a top priority for ICA. We will continue to stay vigilant and thwart smuggling attempts through Singapore’s borders.
Members of public who are keen to purchase pets are reminded to do so through licensed pet shops or farms, to ensure that the health and welfare of the animal and the proper licensing requirements and records are taken care of. The public should not bring in animals illegally, purchase them or keep them as pets. Those with information on suspected smuggling activities can report them to NParks, and information shared with NParks will be kept strictly confidential. Members of the public may call the 24-hour Animal Response Centre at 1800-476-1600 for suspected smuggling issues.
